We have had many responses from the lesson on Addiction last Tuesday at Kairos. Thank you for sharing your questions and your pain with us. Without answering every specific question, let me see if I can give you some general guidance. Most addictions are accompanied by a mental health issue, what we call a co-occurring disorder. It may be anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder, trauma, attachment issues, body image issues, etc. Simply treating the addiction alone will not get to the root of the problem. My dad tells a story about being in the Air Force. My dad’s unit was taken out to the officer’s golf course and told to dig a ditch for the irrigation system. After several hours of digging that ditch in the Louisiana sun, a sergeant asked my dad, “Can you drive a truck?” My dad says he knew two things. First, if anyone else had learned to drive a truck, he could drive a truck. And second, it had to be easier than digging that ditch.
